ALEC SHANE | Horror
Writers House, LLC
Submissions page:  http://www.writershouse.com/submissions/

Twitter:  @alecdshane
Facebook: N/A
Blog(s):  N/A

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
BE THE FIRST
***In addition to Horror, Alec will also accept Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Historical Fiction, and Literary Fiction
He loved reading:
THE STAND - Stephen King
THE GRAPES OF WRATH - John Steinbeck
DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD - Roald Dahl

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Twitter is sometimes a great place to learn 'insider' information about your agent.  Some of them share personal stories and pictures, but the greater number of them are strictly professional and stick to task. Alec isn't just hinting about what he wants on his twitter feeds, he is openly telling writers what he wants:   "
Mystery or thriller with a protagonist who actually has a family. Brooding loners are great, but let's switch it up a bit.  |  Would love to find a historical fiction - or a well-written nonfiction - about The Maccabees.  |  I'm actively looking for books about WWII."  Alec wrote on his Twitter, "Before emailing an agent to ask about their submission process, make sure it's a question you can't answer yourself with a simple Google search."  What I took from this comment is Alec is a man who doesn't like his time wasted.  PS - Once upon a time, Alec was also a professional stunt man in L.A.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Alec is specifically looking for Horror, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction, and books geared toward young male readers (both YA and MG). He also has very little interest in zombies/zombie apocalypse's and in an interview (regarding taking on clients) he stated: If I get the sense that you are going to be impossible to work with, only care about money, don’t want to respond to criticism, or are exceptionally needy, then I’m going to be hesitant to take you."
AGENT ALERT Alec is a new agent and he is aggressively building his clientele!  Now is the perfect opportunity to submit your work to a fresh agent!

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Alec is not looking for Romance (paranormal or otherwise), straight sci-fi, high fantasy, picture books, self-help, woman’s fiction, food, travel memoir.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Alec (or his agency) has published. If none are listed, read some of the books Alec likes. This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that he and/or his agency are looking for.

It's really important that you read one or more of your intended agents published books or books he/she likes to read.  Then, if you don't enjoy what your reading, that's a red flag there might not be a good fit between your creative style and what the agent is looking for and likes to read.

Facebook: N/A
Blog(s):  N/A

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
BE THE FIRST
***In addition to Adult Horror, Linda will also accept Adult/YA/MG Fantasy, Light Sci-Fi, Romance, Realistic, and Graphic Novels
She loved reading:
JOINED AT THE HIP - Darlene Smalls
IT - Stephen King
THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE - Audrey Niffenegger
THE KITE RUNNER - Khaled Hosseini
THE NIGHIT CIRCUS - Erin Morgenstern
THE COMPLETE MAUS - Art Spiegelman

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
On twitter, Linda confesses:  I wrote my MFA thesis on Fat Protagonists in YA lit.  Linda has also stated, on several different media, interviews, etc. that she likes darker novels.  She holds a MFA in Creative Writing.  Loves chocolate, travel and television.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Linda is a self-confessed "omnivorous" reader - looking for everything between clean and lighthearted to edgy and dark.  Her genre range is eclectic.  She is looking for Adult/YA/MG fiction in Horror, Fantasy, Realistic, Light Sci-Fi and Graphic Novels.  Linda has also made it clear that she accepts diversity of all types: Ethnicity, Disability, Sexuality, Etc.  In an interview, Linda stated:  "I have to say, I do skew toward darker books, ones that reflect the human condition in all its ugliness and beauty. Ones that make my heart pound or tear it right out in the telling. Patrick Ness’s A Monster Calls, Meg Rosoff’s How I Live Now, Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone, and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, come to mind as examples."

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Early readers/chapter books, screenplays, poetry, and short stories.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Linda (or her agency) has published.  If none are listed, read some of the books Linda likes.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

CARA MANNION | Horror
Harold Ober Associates
Submissions
Twitter:  @Cara_Mannion
Facebook: N/A
Blog(s): https://caramannion.wordpress.com/

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
BE THE FIRST
***In addition to Horror, Cara will also accept Adult Commercial Fiction, including Romance (and all its subgenres), Historical Fiction, Woman’s Fiction, Paranormal, Science Fiction,  Mysteries and Thrillers.  She is primarily interested in YA.
A few authors Cara's agency represents:
Nigel Barley
Correlli Barnett
Erik Barnouw Estate
Michael Barrier
Robert Beattie
Michael Benson

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Cara currently works in both the book and film/TV worlds as she assists with selling books’ motion picture rights (she does not represent TV/Film scripts!). Originally from Florida.  Honestly, Cara is either such a consummate professional or a clever social media dodger...there really isn't much else (of personal ilk) to tell about her.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Cara particularly enjoys strong female protagonists, juicy love triangles, subversive conspiracy plots, and opening lines that make you want to jump headfirst into the book.  Since she does have her fingers in film/TV you might do well spinning a yarn about that industry.  In an interview, Cara gave this advice to authors:  "Instead of saying that your work will make readers cry and cheer for the protagonist, show agents this emotion through interesting, succinct writing."  NOTE:  In this same interview, Cara comes across as a total professional - and she clearly expects potential clients to show the same professionalism when submitting queries!   Interestingly, Cara also said this - Agents need to reject for a variety of reasons, including having a title too similar to yours and having too many authors to represent already.

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Fantasy, memoirs, picture books, poetry, self-help books, screenplays and short story collections.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Cara (or her agency) has published. If none are listed, check out some of the authors represented by her agency.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

SARAH NAGEL | Horror
Writers House, LLC
Submissions page: http://www.writershouse.com/submissions/
Twitter:  @SarahNagel14
Facebook: N/A
Blog(s):  N/A

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
BE THE FIRST
***In addition to Horror, Sarah will also accept Mystery, Suspense, Literary Fiction and some YA/MG
A few books/authors Sarah's agency represents:
THE LIAR - Nora Roberts
MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN - Ransom Riggs
DEAD ICE - Laurell K Hamilton
SUDDENLY ONE SUMMER - Julia James
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS - John Green

==============================================================

READ WHAT SARAH SAID IN AN INTERVIEW.  IT SO SUPPORTS TARGETED WRITING!

The author making an informed decision about who they've submitted to!  I.E. That they've done their research and are submitting to you because their project tallies with your taste.

The question was:  What are some things you love to see in a query?

==============================================================

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Sarah started off as a media lawyer in London, so some aspects of media law in your story might pique her interest.  She stated on her Twitter wish list: "Looking for clever YA and adult psychological thrillers. The kind that mess with your head - a YA psychological thriller that really makes you question what you're reading and whose point of view your getting."

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Sarah keeps her eye out for psychological thrillers (those that mess with your head rather than high speed cross-country chases).  In addition to Horror, she likes Mystery, Suspense, and Literary Fiction.  She especially likes strong character-driven fiction and stories that explore the dynamics of a dysfunctional family unit/relationships - so make sure your story includes one or both elements. Sarah also represents realistic Young Adult and Middle Grade with a hint of magical realism. **On the non-fiction side Sarah is interested in medical ethics, true crime, humor books and memoir with a distinctive narrative voice with a universal resonance - so those might all be topics of interest to her in a fiction story, too!
