Debbie LOVED these books:  A Royal Duty by Paul Burrell, Schulz by David Michaelis, Woman Hollering Creek, Netherland, Ask Me No Questions, A Complicated Kindness, Mermaids, Anywhere But Here, Almost French by Sarah Turnbull, Orchid Thief, Secret Life of the Lonely Doll, Summer at Tiffany, My Life in France by Julia Child, Garlic & Sapphires by Ruth Reichl, Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Good Soldier, Collected Stories of Eudora Welty, Collected Stories of John Cheever, Coney Island Lost & Found, Little House on the Prairie series, Mary Poppins.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Prior to starting her own agency, Debbie worked in the music business in A&R and artist management. If your protag or one of the main characters works in that field she might be inclined to read further.  Debbie also holds a BA in English and music from College of Arts and Sciences, NYU - if your protag hails from her Alma meter it might pique her interest.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
On her website, Debbie writes that she is looking for:  Multicultural and international fiction that's relateable to American reader.  She also states she'd like to see mysteries, thrillers, suspense novels with likable heroes or anti-heroes that are satisfying but not predictable. *Note:  Debbie is not interested in serial killers or gruesome description.  She also said in regards to Mainstream Fiction, she is not looking for category romance, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, religious/spiritual fiction, gratuitous sex and violence or the sentimental. Accidents or medical diagnoses as inciting incidents show a lack of imagination.

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Essay collections, topics in medicine, health, psychology, science, technology, finance, business, politics, religion/spirituality, stories of abuse or victimhood, accidents, sports, pets, cooking, food or true crime.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Debbie (or her agency) has published.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Pooja Menon earned her BA from Nottingham Trent University in England, and an M.F.A from The Otis School of Art & Design in Los Angeles, so if your protag hails from her Alma meter it might pique her interest.  Obviously any transatlantic traveler or 'away from home' character will interest her, too.  From her twitter page:  Lover of all things literary, movie/TV buff, avid traveler, devoted foodie, news addict, and an animal lover through & through!

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Pooja is looking for compelling writing with an easy flow, a timely pacing, a unique perspective, and strong voices. She enjoys literary, commercial, historical, and upmarket women’s fiction; but is particularly drawn to stories with an international flavor, vibrant characters, multicultural themes, and lush settings. She has a soft spot for fantasy novels that are original and layered, with worlds as real and alive as the ones created by Philip Pullman and J.K. Rowling. In YA, she’s eagerly looking for submissions across all genres (contemporary, adventure, realist, paranormal romance, gothic, horror, historical, steampunk, dystopian, magical realism, urban fantasy, and new age).
AGENT ALERT Pooja is actively seeking to build her client list.  Now is the perfect opportunity to present your work to a hungry agent!
