Mary specializes in science fiction and fantasy, although she does appreciate a wide breadth of the literary cannon.
Some of Mary's favorite books/authors are:
Anne McCaffrey, Don Quixote, Robin McKinley, Pride & Prejudice, Patricia A. McKillip, The Count of Monte Cristo, Toni Morrison, Blood Meridian, Charlotte Bronte, The Master & Margarita, Herman Hesse, Cosmic Banditos, and John Steinbeck

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Mary grew up reading Peter Pan, The World of Pooh, Little House on the Prairie, Alice In Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Enchanted Forest - these were among her favorites.  She was a veterinarian’s assistant, then a field biologist, and then a zookeeper at the San Francisco Zoo, while she wrote her first novel - so a protag in any one of these fields might pique her interest.  PS - Mary authored 'The Coyote Howls' which is featured in the Flash Fiction 2014 Anthology.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Mary can be weak-kneed for a good commercial book. Commercially she is looking for unusual fantasy, grounded science-fiction, and atypical romance. Strong female characters and unique cultures especially catch her eye. Although she will not consider most non-fiction, stories about any kind of dance or native and pagan cultures may interest her.  She also likes debut/popular/indie fiction.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books or authors Mary has listed as her fav's.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and (possibly) her agency are looking for.

***In addition to Sci-Fi, Kurestin will also accept Upmarket and Commercial Fiction, Magic Realism, Fantasy, Alternative History, Historical Fiction, LGBTQ (any genre), select Young Adult and Middle Grade, Graphic Novels, Mystery (including mystery with elements of SF/F), and Romance
Her agency represents the following:
THE SECRETS OF LAKE ROAD - Karen Katcher
ENDANGERED - Pamela Beason
FAKING PERFECT - Rebecca Phillips
THE HOLDERS - Julianna Scott

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Kurestin spends a lot of time perusing indie bookstores, so your story set in an indie bookstore might grab her attention.  She likes cats (a lot).  Kurestin went to Kenyon college, so if your protag hails from her Alma mater it might pique her interest.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Kurestin reads widely across genres, and has a particular affection for science fiction and fantasy, especially books that recognize and subvert typical tropes of genre fiction [Side note to reader:  In literature, a trope is a familiar and repeated symbol, meme, theme, motif, style, character or thing that permeates a particular type of literature. They are usually tied heavily to genre. For example, tropes in horror literature and film include the mad scientist or a dark and stormy night. Tropes can also be plots or events, such as the science fiction trope of an alien invasion that is deterred at the last minute.]
(ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trope (literature))
AGENT ALERT Kurestin tweeted in her wishlist: "Bisexual protagonists are definitely on my #mswl !"  She also tweeted: "Whenever I get a manuscript written in Courier, I feel like I'm reading a ransom note."  so keep all queries and manuscripts in TNR.

As do we all, agents generally have a favorite genre and may even mostly represent a certain genre.  Just be certain to peruse the RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED section of every agent profile.  Here you will find helpful tips such as, "In addition to Primary Genre, AGENT NAME will also accept Other Genre(s).  At minimum you will have access to books and/or authors the agent likes and can make an informed decision if the agent's tastes closely matche what you've written or want to write about

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
***In addition to Sci-Fi, Merrilee will also accept Literary Fiction, Commercial Fiction, Fantasy, YA, Multi-Cultural, MG and Graphic Novels
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE - Beth Revis
THE HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY - Neil Gaiman
Merrille's New York Times Bestsellers include authors Gaiman, Laurell K. Hamilton, Melissa Marr and Beth Revis.  Her award winners include three Newbery Medals (Cynthia Voigt, Robin McKinley and Neil Gaiman) and a MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient (the late Octavia E Butler).

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
I could not find a ton of personal information about Merrilee.  I did capture that she is one of the few agents who is well known for representing both adult and childrens books.  This rare duality has allowed her success with authors who don't fall into categories and who can benefit from her overall career management.  Kind of generic, I know, sorry!  But you do have a full list of books published and clients. smile*

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Again, no tweets or FB posts or even an interview in which Merrillee breaks down and reveals anything specific.  After looking through her impressive client and representation list, however, I'd venture to guess a "strong and unique voice".  As usual, I very much recommend that you read a handful of Merrillee's represented clients and/or her NY Times Bestsellers list.

Matt's clients include: CJ Cherryh, P.F. Kluge, and Jay Kristoff

                    Dover Books

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Matt is a black and white street photographer with work in museums, a poet and watercolor landscape painter (as taken from his Twitter page).  He is a Vassar College grad, so a protag hailing from his Alma mater might pique his interest.  In all of his interviews, Matt comes across as well spoken, a tiny bit snarky, and clearly intelligent.  He will probably appreciate an author with those same traits.

==================================================

READ WHAT MATT SAID IN AN INTERVIEW.  IT SO SUPPORTS TARGETED WRITING!

A lack of knowledge about the publishing world. Many people just put on their blinders and shotgun their queries out there. It shows. I think it is good for a writer to come across like they follow trends, they know what sells, who they would compare their work to, why they chose to write to me in particular. Presentation makes a big difference. Only a small percentage of queries have a savvy.

=============================================================

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Matt is  looking for something supernatural that fits into this whole paranormal craze going on.  He is looking for something fresh and with a world pretty mapped out - something really good and new - like a great fantasy or a great thriller that has a new twist on something. In thrillers, he's stated he likes "either the Harlan Coban kind of domestic suspense (ordinary people in trouble), or I am looking for thrillers that have some crossover into the fantastic or supernatural."  Matt is also taken with some Literary Fiction, but states, "That is a tricky area. I think novels that take place in more exotic places are what sell in that area."  Overall advice?  Don’t just follow a trend.  Own your idea.  Live it.  Breathe it.
AGENT ALERT:  Matt said, "Urban fantasy in the Young Adult market is in, as are suspense novels with a supernatural element."  High-five and note to self!  Start writing it!

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
''The story is not grabbing me. The writing is flat. I feel like I have read this too many times before''

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Matt (or his agency) has published.  Peruse through his client list.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that he and/or his agency are looking for.

MATT BIALER WORDS OF WISDOM:
If something becomes a bestseller, check it out and ask yourself why.
