SPECULATIVE FICTION Agents

For those who are  uncertain:  Speculative Fiction is a term that can be used to collectively describe works in the genres of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. Speculative Fiction addresses fiction that includes Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, and Fantastic Fiction.  Stories on the fringe - think The Twilight Zone

PROMISE OF THE WOLVES – Dorothy Hearst
ALL ABOUT LULU – Jonathan Evison
FREE RANGE KIDS - Lenore Skenazy
PACIFIC RIMS -Rafe Bartholomew
THE LAST FARMER  - Jonathan Park
BONE WORSHIP – Elizabeth Eslami
HOW TO MAKE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST IN SIX MONTHS OR LESS, WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR APARTMEN – Gregory Levey

Mollie is always on "always on the hunt for high concept literary fiction along the lines of The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Sparrow, The Magicians, and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle"

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Mollie graduated from Brown University, so a protag from her Alma mater might pique her interest.  Mollie began her publishing career as a literary scout, advising foreign publishers regarding the acquisition of rights to American books, so it might spark her curiosity if one of your characters works in that field.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Mollie is particularly interested in novels that bridge the literary/commercial divide, combining a great, high concept plot with beautiful writing.  In an interview she stated that she is, “Basically [looking for] any book that I pick up and can’t go to sleep until I’ve finished....[that] is a book I’m going to take on!”  Mollie also stated, "Some of my favorite books I’ve worked on recently include West Of Here by Jonathan Evison, Tell The Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rivka Brunt, and Crewel by Gennifer Albin."  This is important to note; now you can read some of Mollie's faves and determine if there will be a good fit with your current manuscript (or - focus on Targeted Writing and make it a good fit).

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Screenplays, romance, genre fiction

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Mollie (or her agency) has published.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

In doing research for this site, time and again I came across an oft repeated agent saying - their mantra and plea:  "I want to see something fresh and original."  From what I can tell that simply means intelligently written crossover novels with one foot squarely in genre

Julie's clients includes: Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury, Sharon Ewell Foster, Liz Curtis Higgs, Ginny Yttrup, Angela Hunt, Robin Jones Gunn, Robin Lee Hatcher, Brandilyn Collins, and many others.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Julie most recently served as Marketing Manager for the Christian Living line at Abingdon Press and was almost listed as one of my Christian agents.  When submitting your spec fiction, you'll definitely want to have an idea of the kind of writing she is looking for.  I always recommend it anyway, but in this instance I highly recommend you read at least one (if not two) of her published books before submitting.  She has more than 25 years public relations and marketing experience, so a protag in that field might pique her interest.  Directly from Julie's Twitter account:  Wife, mom, bibliofile, pet lover, craft doer, sport following, southern transplant.  Julie is from Nashville, so your story set in the south might be well received.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Julie has said:  "I would love to see great romance with smart, witty banter (either contemporary or historical). I would like to see smart suspense that leaves me questioning ‘who dun it’ until the end."  She would also like to see cozy mysteries, sports romance, and Military stories. Julie is looking for unique ideas or plots with twists, and has stated, "I’ve seen a lot of dystopian, angels and demons, novels where the protagonist suffers from multiple issues (alcoholism, bulimia, abuse, homelessness)."

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Horror

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Julie (or her agency) has published.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.
