YOUNG ADULT Agents

KATHLEEN ANDERSON | YA
Anderson Literary Management
Submissions page:  http://www.andersonliterary.com/web/submissions/index.html
Twitter:  @KAndersonbird
Facebook:  N/A
Blog(s):  N/A

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
***In addition to YA, Kathleen will also accept General Woman Fiction & Historical Fiction
SOME OF THE DEAD ARE STILL BREATHING - Charles Bowden
YES, MY DARLING DAUGHTER - Margaret Leroy
SONATA FOR MIRIAM - Linda Olsson
HAUSFAU - Jell Essbaum

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Kathleen is a dog lover.  She seems to have a light political bend (although to which party I don't know).  Will defend her authors against rough book reviews.  She is from Arlington, VA so a story about her home town might go over well.  Loves (repeat - Loves) her country houses - - they remind her of her grandmother's country house in Sweden.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Kathleen likes smartly humorous, psychological suspense, stylish thrillers & novels with ghostly elements.  She loves literature in translation (although the submitted work must be in English).

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
N/A

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Kathleen (or her agency) has published.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

CLAIRE ANDERSON-WHEELER | YA
Regal Literary
Submissions page:  http://www.regal-literary.com/submissions/
Twitter:  N/A
Facebook: N/A
Blog(s):  N/A

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
BE THE FIRST
***In addition to YA, Claire will also accept MG, Literary Fiction, and Commercial Women’s Fiction driven by strong contemporary issues.
She loved reading:
DAMAGAE - Josephine Hart
THE SECRET HISTORY - Donna Tartt

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Claire likes some Fantasy and Sci-Fi.  She was born in DC, raised in Switzerland & Belgium and is Irish.  She studied to be a lawyer but has a Masters in Creative Writing.  Her favorite books ever are Anna Kerenina, The Secret History and The Magician's Nephew

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Claire likes some Fantasy & Sci-Fi.  She likes realistic characters with a touch of fatalism.
Her own advice:  "Read - and not just for pleasure, but forensically. Read how-to books as well. They're often underrated. Robert McKee's 'Story' is one of my favorites."
AGENT ALERT:  Claire once stated in an interview that she would like to see more sibling adventures.

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Horror and romance, supernatural thrillers or epic fantasy. Claire also dislikes "mystery queries"...queries that leave her wondering what happened...she wants to know every detail of your story so she can make an informed decision about representing you and your work.  She's also said, 'Never kid yourself that someone else is not going to notice the flaws. Those bits you already know are not working? Fix them.'

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Claire (or her agency) has published.  If none are listed, read some of the books Claire likes.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

WHITLEY ABELL | YA
Inklings Literay Agency, LLC
Submissions page:  https://whitleyabell.wordpress.com/submissions-2/
Twitter:  @whitleyabell
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhitleyAbellLiteraryAgent
Blog(s):  https://whitleyabell.wordpress.com/

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
BE THE FIRST
***In addition to YA, Whitley will also accept MG and Women’s Fiction
She mentioned a few fav authors:  Sophie Kinsella, Lauren Morrill, and Stephanie Perkins

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Whitley is a self-described feminist, Harry Potter-obsessed agent with a social justice agenda.  She is allergic to almond, soy, and coconut milk.  Whitley has a soft spot for the goofy guys, awkward ducks, April Ludgates, and devout fan girls of the world.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Whitley likes characters that don't just tell the story...have your character act out the story so she can "see" it happening.  Whitley also likes characters who are relatable yet flawed, hooks that offer new points of view and exciting adventures, and vibrant settings that become active characters in their own right. She is open to almost anything with in the areas above, be it contemporary or historical, romance or thriller, realistic or supernatural, tragic or quirky.  She loves mythology and literary re-imaginings, heartbreaking contemporary novels, historical suspense, and craving cute romantic comedies for YA through adult (ex: Sophie Kinsella, Lauren Morrill, Stephanie Perkins).
AGENT ALERT: When asked, "Are you open to historical mysteries with a female protag?"  Whitley's answer was "Yes Ma'am!"

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
Vampires, werewolves, angels, zombies, dystopian societies, steampunk, or epic fantasy.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Whitley (or her agency) has published.  If none are listed, check out some of Whitley's favorite authors.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.

Sometimes knowing where an agent grew up, the degree they hold, if they like children and/or animals, and other personal information are good tools when writing your story.  Always glimpse through the NOTES & OBSERVATIONS as they sometimes provide extra clues as to what might entice a potential agent to request your full manuscript

LAUREN ABRAMO | YA
Dystel & Goderich Literary Management
Submissions page:  http://www.dystel.com/submission-requirements/
Twitter:  @LaurenAbramo
Facebook: N/A
Blog(s):  N/A

RECENT BOOKS PUBLISHED:
INSPECTOR OF THE DEAD - David Morrell
CONFESS - Colleen Hoover
EPITAPH - Mary Doria Russell
SEDUCED BY SUNDAY - Catherine Bybee

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS:
Lauren has an MA from the National University of Ireland, Galway.  She also has a degree in Irish studies.  As a child she was a big fan of the Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House On The Prarie) books.  Lauren is a fan of soccer, travel, creepy/amazing internet black holes and clever turns of phrase (as taken from her twitter page).  She is a fan of Les Misérables.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY / ELEMENTS YOUR STORY SHOULD HAVE:
Lauren looks for  humorous middle grade, contemporary YA, and adult fiction including contemporary romance; smart, funny contemporary fiction; and well-paced literary fiction with a unique voice.  As a side note, in non-fictions she is interested in adult narrative, pop culture, psychology, pop science, reportage, media, contemporary culture, and history.  **This non-fiction insight might help you write your story with some of these elements.
AGENT ALERT:  Lauren is especially interested in underrepresented voices - so a story about this group would go over well with her!  Need ideas?  Minority groups,  females, single persons, Latinos, foreign-born naturalized citizens, people who do not affiliate themselves with any religion, and the LGBT community.

THIS AGENT DOES NOT REPRESENT:
N/A

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Read at least one (preferably two) of the books Lauren (or her agency) has published.  This will give you a very good 'insiders glimpse' as to exactly the kind of writing style, voice, protagonist, etc. that she and/or her agency are looking for.
